Hugging, pressing, squeezing, stroking, pinching, scraping and dozens of other forms of
touch – being such a basic human sense. When we are very small, touching is the most
important thing, right next to food and sleep. Without touching, we can not fully develop. We
demand and shout for the warmth of someone’s body.
Why do we touch so little and little in adulthood?
What is our own body for us and how much attention do we pay to it?
Our everyday life has largely brought the role of the body to the role of a product. The body is
needed to earn scores, points, money, things. If you are ill, there are tablets on it. Tablets for
everything, even on legs that quiver during sleep. The tablets accelerate the recovery of the
body so that we can return to scoring, points, money and things as soon as possible. Of
course, it’s good if we’re doing some sport – skiing in the winter (without preparation, I just put
my skis on and go down!), Swimming in the summer, sunbathing in the company of
unhealthy food. Holidays once or twice in 360 days for about 1 week. Rest is a series of
intense activities – trips, events, attractions. So it is not a rest. The body does the work non-
stop.
Why are we so tired? Because if we do nothing, maybe if we’re not there? We do not know
each other, because we are busy from the tiny one. 2-3-year old children learn French,
ballet, karate. In addition, a speech therapist, corrective gymnastics, rhythmics and learning
to speak in your native language! Alternatively tablet-cartoons tablet-cartoons tablet-
cartoons. Where is the time to relax? Where is the time to do anything? Where is the time for
silence? Where is the time? Fortunately, there are even nights during which one sleeps. Only
what we dream of after such a day ?!
The body is a fascinating instrument that despite what we suggest to it – what’s even more –
what we encourage our children to do, can adapt, regulate and regenerate.
Thanks to this, we can constantly increase our productivity and implement several life
scenarios at the same time. Multiply, secure, put down, accumulate, collect for later. If we
pay special attention to the body, it is to its appearance. It is our culture that also encourages
us to that. Nice people have easier life! To wash oneself. To wash. To iron. To dress-up. To
do make-up. To comb. And to look. To make a good impression .
The situation changes if we do not have the strength to look and the level of satisfaction from
our lives is rapidly decreasing. We have small and crying children, because of which w
exclude ourselves from social life. We do not achieve a dream career for which we spent so
many years. The people we cared about started to be interested in other people who care
about them. We start to get sick – headaches, creaking knees, less and less elastic spine,
memory problems, and finally – chronic fatigue. Of course, the disease is an ideal situation
for us to remember that we have a body. However, the body is not only muscles, bones and
internal organs. It is also our energy resources, vitality, spirituality, imagination, empathy,
intuition and intimacy. Intimacy is simply sex? – Someone will ask. Intimacy is of course
sexuality with a partner, but also closeness with children and friends or enjoying the senses
of taste, smell, hearing. It’s a pleasure! Extremely intimate and enjoyable may be contact
with food, nature or music, and this intimacy is perceived by the body and its ability to
perceive various subtleties. The reception of these nuances is our uniqueness and proves
that we are not programmed machines for acquiring, producing and ultimately consuming
and throwing away.
Let’s not be crazy about having things, gadgets, money.
Only the body and the body is needed to cuddle. What a great, intelligent and sensitive
instrument! Pressing the body to the body can do real miracles, from the silencing of
stressors of everyday life to forgiveness, tolerance and selfless love. Not everything is for
sale and not everything can be obtained with the help of money.
Life is for living.

We are artists and parents of a 4-year-old Miłosz. In 2017, we jointly created the MaMoMi
performative installation for young children at Nowy Teatr in Warsaw. Tomek Bergmann
came up with a space, Iza Chlewińska with directing. Parts of the installation remained in our
apartment, and among them was a long tunnel, tied on one side, that is … such a modern
sack. Miłosz, from the very beginning, loved to go inside and drag it along the floor. Thanks
to Tomek's strong hands, sometimes he even was flying! The material is flexible and
naturally tightens the whole body, therefore the most natural position of Miłosz was the
embryonic position. Curled up in a ball he squealed with joy, closed tightly in a bag, which is
transparent, but only for him. He became invisible, seeing everything around. We thought
then that it was our small MaMoMi – a micro version of a super-safe place, reminiscent of the
mother’s womb.
One day Miłosz experienced an emotional crisis – he cried, shouted, could not calm down,
and we also could not help him. Then I asked him: DO YOU WANT TO GO INSIDE THE
BAG? At once, as with the magic spell, Miłosz marched quickly towards the rolled-up bag
(the bag takes up as much space as the small sheet). The floor road ride lasted a few
minutes and then we started talking normally. Since then the bag has been waiting quietly
among the bed sheets and bedding for a moment. Works reliably. It’s like a magic spell.
Sold out tickets and undue interest in the MaMoMi performative installation has convinced us
that people need equally sensory experiences as rest and tranquility. That is why we decided
to create sensory objects that will be in our home. We conduct research using a workshop
method, working with the body and mind, but we also consult our ideas with therapists and
psychologists. We believe that together we can create inspirational, abstract and close to
body sensory objects that can change the quality of our lives. We are guided by the idea of
strengthening ties, creating lasting relationships and living in harmony with each other.
If you want to learn more about our installation MaMoMi, we have text and photos of a
blogger Kaja Wolnicka for you, as well as video of Tomek Bergmann –the author of the
sensory space.

The Body.Voice.Intuition practice calms down, gives energy, positively tunes, creates a
community, builds respect for one’s body and the other’s body. It is the area of self-
observation that leads to the conformity of the body, mind and heart. It is a physical practice
whose basis is the body, the voice that comes out of it and the intuition which is the source of
thoughts, feelings and observations.

The Body.Voice.Intuition practice includes five different but interconnected techniques:

1. Practicing Nothing
Getting rid of tensions that leads to a sense of body integrity, awareness of its area, being in
harmony with the body, or a sense of body unity, deep relaxation. It’s a technique related to
body anatomy, imagination and meditation.

2. Relieving the sound
Giving sound similar to the sound of an infant or animal gives a large distance to oneself,
warms the body up from the inside, wakes up to intuitive thinking, is an area of self-
observation. It’s a technique related to sound, breath and concentration.

3. The theory of great pressure
Dialoguing with a partner in a clutch trains mindfulness, empathy, releases the joy of working
with one’s body, gives emotions, affection, and teaches care and devotion. It leads to
connection with another human being. It is a technique related to physicality and energy flow.

4. Pleasure techniques
The search for pleasure when moving is an anti-depressing journey and a return to the
childhood. It is an activity in a group and being fully dependent. It triggers a sense of
pleasure, sometimes euphoria, gratitude, responsibility. It’s a technique related to the
movement improvisation, mindfulness and concentration.

5. Body in a sack
Separation from external stimuli and individual space for yourself. It leads
to a state of mind without thinking, meditative calmness, a sense of harmony, security, self-
acceptance. It’s a technique related to physicality and meditation.

Who is Izabela Chlewińska?
The author of the Body.Voice.Intuition practice is Izabela Chlewińska – choreographer,
performer and teacher. She holds a master’s degree in art with a specialization in rhythm.
Izabela is an independent artist in the field of new dance and experimental choreography.
She works with the choreographic collective Centrum w Ruchu in Warsaw and holds
scholarship of prestigious residences in Vienna, Antwerp, Philadelphia and Tokyo. She
performed on the stages among others in Beijing, Edinburgh, Yokohama. She directs movement for theaters in Poland
and Germany, author of original dance performances, pedagogue with 15 years of
experience. Together with her husband Tomek Bergmann, she created a performative
installation for children MaMoMi in Nowy Teatr in Warsaw. This project marked her search in
the field of sensorics, pleasure, various forms of care and work with sensory objects created
by Bergmann.
